India Ochs Attorney at Law

Creating a compelling argument designed to sway juries and impress judges is a challenge for even the most gifted attorney, but orator India Ochs manages to do just that without saying a word. Born with a rare neuromuscular condition that prevents her from speaking clearly, India has managed to communicate more in 27 years than most people do in a lifetime.

“In the courtroom, classroom, other public venues, and on the phone, I use my laptop with the E Z Keys software, preprogramming speeches, arguments, and questions, but also having to be prepared to throw in comments or questions that I can’t foresee,” said India.

India believes that using a computer to communicate gives her an advantage in the classroom and in the courtroom. “The strangeness of my computer allows the ears and minds of my listeners to be much more open to what I’m saying.”

This is only a small part of the reason for her amazing personal and professional success. From a young age, India has passionately pursued a variety of interests, including soccer, skydiving, student government, and writing. Armed with bachelor’s degrees in political science and history and a master’s degree in public affairs, India continued her education at Syracuse University College of Law, where she graduated last May with a law degree and a certificate in Family Law and Social Policy. While in graduate school, she worked as a court advocate for children in foster care and designed Web pages for various local government agencies.

Most recently, India accepted a position with Americorps, where she is working to establish Common Senses, a nonprofit agency in Baltimore dedicated to serving the needs of youth with and without sensory disabilities.

“My parents told me to be whatever I wanted and I believed them,” said India. “I just enjoy everything in life and I never saw a reason not to go after whatever I wanted.”
